As a resident of Maardu, you decide who leads the city by participating in local elections.  The participatory budget initiative empowers every resident of Maardu to decide which projects or facilities will come to life, giving you a direct role in shaping our community. Each year, through the inspiring "Make Your Hometown Beautiful" idea competition, residents can share their vision for improving the city. Whether it's an outdoor pool, a basketball court, or an open-air stage, your ideas matter. The winning proposals are brought to life, transforming dreams into reality and making Maardu a better place for everyone.

Maardu proudly hosts a new Health Center, equipped with cutting-edge technologies and staffed by highly skilled family doctors. Beyond healthcare, the city offers an impressive range of sports activities to suit all interests, including scuba diving, taekwondo, table tennis, rhythmic gymnastics, street dance, boxing, and more. Residents benefit from exceptional facilities such as a sports complex with a swimming pool, a large football stadium, health trails, a sand volleyball court, and skate parks. This dedication to sports has helped nurture remarkable talent, with Maardu producing legendary athletes like football stars Konstantin Vassiljev and Dmitri Kruglov, world champion ballroom dancer Konstantin Gorodilov, and European diving silver medalist Jelena Smirnova. The Culture and Information Center brings the city together with grand celebrations, including the Maslenitsa festivals (celebrating both Slavic and Estonian cultures), lively spring and autumn fairs, enchanting Midsummer festivities, City Day, First Advent and dazzling New Year’s Eve celebrations. For outdoor enthusiasts, Maardu Forest Park offers thrilling activities like paintball, disc golf, and scenic hiking trails. The city also has a Youth Activity Center, a favorite among the younger generation, and a Day Center for young people with special needs. Located just 15 minutes from Estonia’s capital, Maardu is a young, vibrant city brimming with potential. Neighboring Viimsi and Jõelähtme municipalities, Maardu has earned recognition both locally and internationally for its resilience, capabilities, and future-oriented vision. At the heart of Maardu’s economic strength is Muuga Port, Estonia’s largest international cargo port, which reinforces the city’s status as a vital link in global trade.

A city for the youth, where opportunities are always within your grasp

Maardu is a vibrant and youthful city, home to over fifty nationalities, with an average age of just 35–36 years. Known as a city for the young, Maardu offers excellent opportunities for education, work, and a fulfilling leisure life.

The city features three kindergartens, three general education schools, and the Maardu School of Arts. Maardu Gymnasium provides both traditional and flexible non-stationary learning options, standing out with its innovative language immersion program. This approach successfully integrates students from Russian-speaking families into an Estonian-speaking environment while fostering a deeper understanding of both cultures and traditions.

Kallavere Secondary School takes this a step further with its unique triple-language immersion program, where subjects are taught in Estonian, English, and Russian. This multilingual environment provides students with an exceptional opportunity to develop language skills and thrive in a diverse educational setting.

Maardu offers abundant opportunities for an active and diverse lifestyle. The city is home to 15 sports clubs, 43 hobby groups, the Maardu City Library, and numerous vocal, dance, and creative studios. Among these, the Veer & Shpaga Theater and the Art Arena Studio stand out as enriching additions to the city's cultural life.

Maardu continues to grow and develop, with new residential buildings being constructed and the best conditions created to welcome young families into the community. The city cherishes a beautiful tradition of celebrating its youngest residents. Several times a year, the mayor hosts a ceremonial reception for newborns and their parents. This heartfelt event leaves lasting memories for families, who receive a silver spoon and a personalized certificate as a gift.

Well-known sports figures come from Maardu

Thanks to a wide range of sports opportunities, Maardu residents are active in various disciplines. The most successful athletes have brought many remarkable victories to the city.

The Maardu Olümp Kalev Club has been recognized for several years as the strongest boxing club in Estonia. Young taekwondo practitioners and sumo wrestlers have competed successfully at various levels of competition. Our underwater swimmers and competitive dancers are celebrated for their victories both in Estonia and across Europe. The Maardu Linnameeskond football team has won the First League (Esiliiga) and has experience playing in Estonia’s top-tier Premium League.

Sport in our city has taken on an international character – Maardu invites athletes from around the world to participate in international tournaments in boxing, Greco-Roman wrestling, rhythmic gymnastics and table tennis. 

Maardu residents embrace their athletic spirit each year through events like the spring and autumn runs, the Maardu City Run health sports festival, and invigorating wellness hikes. During snowy winters, skiing competitions become a cherished tradition, while the under-ice fishing contest “Maardu Ahven” gathers enthusiasts for a unique challenge.

Rhythmic gymnastics shines brightly in Maardu, with three major tournaments held annually. Among them, “Baltic Autumn,” “May Lilies,” and the national “February Star” stand out as highlights. Sports enthusiasts also have the chance to compete in amateur volleyball, beach volleyball, and football tournaments.

For the youth, street workout and street dance tournaments are a favorite, drawing talented participants not only from Estonia but also from neighboring countries, showcasing a vibrant and dynamic community.

Meaningful free time

In addition to the vast array of leisure activities offered by the city, Maardu is home to several remarkable volunteer organizations and associations. These initiatives enable youth, adults, and seniors alike to feel valued and contribute meaningfully to their community, making a real difference in the city's life.

The Maardu Civic Association "Emade Linn" (Mothers’ City) brings together determined and proactive women who wish to play an active role in the city's social life, gain valuable knowledge, build friendships, and serve as role models for each other and the community. The association organizes sports events, hikes, educational lectures, and seminars, while also engaging in volunteer work and providing assistance to the elderly.

The Young Eagles (Noored Kotkad) and Home Daughters (Kodutütred) are volunteer organizations operating in Maardu under the wing of the Estonian Defense League. Their mission is to foster a spirit of patriotism, provide opportunities for personal development, and teach young people to become capable and resourceful leaders. Participants undergo diverse training, gaining essential knowledge in civics, history, safety, and survival skills. In Maardu, we nurture strong, courageous, and highly capable young individuals ready to lead with confidence and potential.

The Muuga Society is a valued partner of Maardu City, uniting Muuga residents and representing their shared wishes and interests. It empowers locals to actively contribute to the development of their community. The society organizes forums, cleanup campaigns, public events, home café days, fairs, and crisis management projects, all while enriching the life of the area and preserving the history of Muuga.

"Muuga is wonderful!" – with this motto, the Muuga Society serves as the voice and unifier of the local community, fostering a sense of togetherness and making the region a better place to live.

It is also important to highlight the work of the Maardu branch of  The Estonian Society for Nature Conservation, which is dedicated to preserving and valuing the local natural environment. The society brings together nature enthusiasts who actively contribute to environmental protection projects and educational initiatives in the Maardu area. Their activities range from organizing nature hikes to protecting the habitats of endangered species. In collaboration with local residents and the municipality, the society is committed to shaping a greener future for Maardu.
